Game Content

Open the most mysterious Book of Shadows in ancient Egypt and get ready for a new chapter in Tomb-based Book games. The Book of Shadows by World Match is the game that the Book of Ra should have been. This is a great “new” take on the brilliant Book of… series of games, and it really does tick most of the boxes. Yes, it still has that older-than-old Tomb/Indiana Jones style theme, but the soundtrack and the improved options for a win* have greatly improved, with more player enjoyment.

Don’t get me wrong, this is still a plug-and-play slot game that isn’t anywhere near as good as it could be but hats off to World Match gaming with this version.

The “Wilds” scrolls are a great addition to the game and really open up a potential win, not always bigger than your stake, but it looks and sounds like a win. Likewise, the brilliant “Mystery” symbols turn into A,J,Q,K, and Eye, which usually add up to a bonus pot.

Even the Book symbols which trigger the Bonus free spins round is different, with 3-15 Free spins on offer. Once in the free spins game, every wild symbol transforms into a vertical wild. Once you have triggered the wilds, the animation and graphics make it a special event. You even get to participate in the stopping of the page scroll, which doesn’t always work in your favour, I never managed to get 10 or 15 free spins, but the pots worked out seriously generous. All of which add to the coolness of the game.

The safer gambling element to this game is limited to all the usual autoplay mode options. Basically, what you get here is a good old-fashioned dose of self-restraint, or in other words, this is just a spin and win the game with a basic autoplay mode.

Game Developer

WorldMatch might not be the household name that they deserve to be, but they are seriously big in the online Casino slots world. Their introduction to the Book of… games has been impressive, with the fabulous Book of Shadows and the even better Book of Pharaon JP version.

Bonus Feature

Free Spins

The Book of Shadows is built around the classic scatter symbols that you’d normally get with any Book of… slot. Bag a minimum of three scatter symbols to trigger your 3-15 Free spins Bonus round. In the Bonus round, the Book scatter symbols act as multipliers for your bonus symbols.

The jackpots and wins in this game were fabulous, and it took no time at all to start ratching up decent wins. Obviously, luck played its part in this game, but it felt great and I will be back.

Gamble Feature

There is no gamble feature on this game, just the usual autoplay mode, which isn’t all that bad.

*Definition of a win.

A win isn’t always as cut and dry as you’d think when it comes to gambling. Often casinos will display losses as wins. This is not to confuse or con you into depositing more, it’s down to the way that the online slot defines a win.

In simple terms, it does not calculate your initial stake in the way that the bookies do, the slots system only considers the outcome. Your stake is seen as your cost of play. For example, in the betting world, if you play a 10p game and you win 20p, then you have won 10p plus your stake back. In the online casino, the stake is taken out of the equation. This is simply written as a 20p win.

Unfortunately, the same works if you play a 10p game and win 5p. The reality of this is that you have lost 5p from your initial stake. However, the slot game will still display this as a 5p win. It sounds like a trivial thing, as most people will know that this isn’t really a win, but it leads to a false interpretation of what defines a win. It’s this misleading information that can lead to compulsive play.

There are no gambling regulations to curb the way that winnings are displayed, so make sure that you do a stake/win/loss calculation at regular intervals during your play.
