The UK Gambling Commission has imposed a record fine for William Hill businesses totaling a staggering £19.2 million. The fines have been issued to William Hill Online at £12.5m, Mr Green at £3.7m and William Hill land-based shops at £3m.

The fine was issued as a result of systematic failures in the company’s social responsibility and anti-money laundering policies.

Record fine for William Hill

The investigation found that William Hill had failed to adequately protect vulnerable customers, including those with gambling addiction and those displaying signs of harm. The company also failed to carry out proper checks on the source of funds of some customers, which made it possible for individuals to launder money through the gambling site.

The commission found that William Hill had not done enough to identify and intervene with customers who were showing signs of problem gambling. One example was a customer who deposited £654,000 over nine months, despite indicating that they were struggling financially. The customer was eventually jailed for stealing from their employer to fund their gambling addiction.

In addition to the fine, William Hill has been ordered to implement a series of improvements to its policies and procedures. The company has been directed to carry out more thorough checks on the source of funds of its customers and to implement a system for identifying and helping customers who may be at risk of harm.

The record fine for William Hill is part of a wider crackdown by the UK Gambling Commission on the gambling industry. The regulator has been increasing its scrutiny of the sector in recent years and has imposed a number of large fines on other gambling companies for similar failures in social responsibility and anti-money laundering.

The record fine for William Hill sends a clear message to the industry that the UK Gambling Commission is serious about enforcing the rules and protecting consumers. It is hoped that the action taken by the regulator will encourage other companies to improve their own policies and procedures and to ensure that they are doing everything possible to prevent harm to their customers.
